FabLab Barcelona

Organization website

Fab Lab Barcelona is part of the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, where it support different educational and research programs related with the multiple scales of the human habitat. It is also the headquarters of the global coordination of the Fab Academy program in collaboration with the Fab Foundation and the MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms.

I enhanced their website by designing and developing it on open-source platforms. This initial version kickstarted the modernization of their online presence and remained active until 2019.

Users and environment

Fab Lab Barcelona's website is a valuable resource for users interested in digital fabrication and open source design. It focus on students, educators, makers, entrepreneurs, researchers, and professionals by offering tutorials, workshops, project ideas, and access to equipment and facilities, enabling collaboration, innovation, and hands-on learning experiences.

The site also provides educational materials for integrating digital fabrication into academic settings, supports makers and entrepreneurs in prototyping and bringing ideas to life, and keeps researchers and professionals informed about the latest innovations in the field. It serves as a platform that empowers individuals and communities to explore, create, and collaborate within the digital fabrication and innovation ecosystem.

Maker-inspired website

Community-centric shared knowledge

The website's design embodies simplicity and harmony, with vibrant colors and clean typography that draw attention to key information. Bold imagery and large fonts serve to highlight important content, while intuitive navigation, facilitated by a well-organized menu structure, guides visitors through the site. Each section offers detailed insights into the lab's activities, captivating visitors and inspiring further exploration.

By the nature of the organization a key element was to embrace tools shared by the maker community. Thus, we opted for a static site generator hosted on a version control platform, complemented by an open-source CMS which ensured a good experience for content creators.
